May the roof above us never fall in
And may we good companions beneath it never fall out.

In the Hothouse

There's a chill in the air and even the north facing corridor down the side of the house is too cold right now to raise seed or lend shelter to some of the more delicate potted plants in the garden.

Enter the new hothouse - this little aluminium and polycarbonate unit from the Diggers club.

It arrived flat packed and was admittedly a little fiddly for us to put together - it's easier for two to put together so one person can hold the pieces of frame in place while the other manipulates the tiny screws. Once together though it's a great little unit and I quickly potted up some sage, parsley, thyme and borage to germinate under its cozy protection.

Some of the heat loving beauties have suffered under the cold and wet but the blooms on this orchid, though slightly spotted, continue to amaze me with their beauty.
